Love Yourself Healthy Challenge

Here at Faithful Workouts, when we say ‘love yourself,’ we are NOT focusing on what the world tells us about self love. The world often tells us that we are amazing, we can do anything, and that we need to love ourselves. Though this message sounds positive, its root is in our egos, and that is NOT what Christ wants for us. The self love we are focusing on is the kind Christ speaks about in the bible. Multiple times throughout the Gospels, Jesus commands his disciples and other listeners to  “…love those around you as you love yourself” Matthew 19:19 (TPT), or more famously said, “…love your neighbor as well as you love yourself” Luke 10:27 (TPT). So what does that exactly mean? Doesn’t that mean we need to love ourselves like society says? Well, yes and no-let’s break it down.

The bible tells us exactly what love is, and why we so desperately need it. “This is love: He loved us long before we loved him. It was his love, not ours. He proved it by sending his Son to be the pleasing sacrificial offering to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10 (TPT) Further along in this chapter, we can read that “Our love for others is our grateful response to the love God first demonstrated to us” 1 John 4:19 (TPT). The only love we truly have is God’s love, and any expression of love we feel or receive is a direct extension of the love from our Heavenly Father. That is a POWERFUL thing to come to terms with, and it’s why understanding ‘self love’ in a Christian context is so important.

In order to love yourself you need to first know that you are unconditionally loved by the creator of the universe who sacrificed everything to save you, and that there is nothing you could do or say in your lifetime to separate yourself from this love. You were bought at the highest price, eternally saved, and completely forgiven by Christ on the cross. This is the love that covers you every day. So, to love yourself is not to look in the mirror and say “I am amazing all on my own.” Rather, it is to know who your Father is, how much He loves you, and that you are to let this love permeate every area of your life.

You are not to degrade yourself or treat yourself poorly; Jesus didn’t save you so you could do that. You are to respect and love yourself as Christ would in mind, body, and spirit. Self love doesn’t mean you believe you are enough, it is recognizing that you have been saved from your sin and that the love and forgiveness of Jesus is more than enough to redeem you. To let the love of Christ cover and guide your thoughts, feelings, and actions is to love yourself.

I often hear from people who go on diets or start a new exercise program because they hate their body (so sad) Our hope with our “Love Yourself Healthy” challenge is that you will be motivated to make healthy changes because you love your body and want to take good care of it. Our thoughts play a huge part in our actions so if we can change our thoughts we increase our success rate in changing our actions.

So here’s what we want you to do. Write down 3 goals. We want you to come up with SMART goals which means they need to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. We also want your goals to be action orientated not results oriented, so your goal would be about your daily activity, not the result you hope to achieve. The last part of the goal setting is you have to begin with the words, “Because I love myself I will…..” (this is the part that may feel super uncomfortable, but go with it)

So let me share my goals with you so you can see how this comes together.

Because I love myself I will eat at least 3 servings of vegetables each day

Because I love myself I will go for a prayer walk 4 times a week.

Because I love myself I will read at least 1 chapter in my Bible each day.

Notice that each of my goals are specific, measurable (don’t just say I will exercise more or I will eat healthier make it more specific and measurable) achievable, realistic and timely PLUS they are based on actions not results.

I know it’s not easy to love yourself so we’ve created daily emails to go along with this challenge. To receive our daily emails and access the workouts created specifically for our Love Yourself Healthy Challenge you can sign up for our online membership.  It’s only $5.97/month and you can try it for FREE for 7 days.

I’m so excited for this! I totally agree that we need to learn to love ourselves in a Godly way. I meet and speak with women all the time who are not kind to themselves and we sometimes are not kind to each other, because we don’t love ourselves. Thank you for thinking of this, praying for Gods leading and guiding us on this journey.

My problems aren’t with my weight. I eat healthfully and exercise almost daily, either weightlifting, speed walking, or running intervals. I am completely undisciplined, however, in going to bed at night. I go to bed at 1:00 or 2:00 every morning, then I get up between 8:00 and 9:30, which has a negative impact on my day because I feel like I’m “playing catch-up”—and I’m out of sync with the rest of the world! I have hundreds of books, many of which have been on my shelves for decades, but I hardly read because I’ve slept too late and I have too many things to do. I will be turning 60 years old next summer, and I plan to use this challenge to finally love myself enough to go to bed early, get up early, and read in my beautiful parlor every day.

I feel like God will personally minister to each of us. He knows our struggles. I love the verse in Colossians where Paul says, “I work very hard at this as I depend on Christ’s mighty power that lives in me.” God will do His part and you need to do your part. Sit down and put together a night time plan that goes along with the schedule you want to keep. He is there to help!

I have made clean eating a habit since April of last year. I see my body needs the excercise to show my Healthy achievements.

I know it can be so challenging to age. We long for the body and strength we had when we were younger. Of course we can do things to help our body stay strong but in reality it will age. Learning to love your body with where it is can be so important. We will be sharing on this during the challenge

I’m 68 and the ball is in my court, isn’t it? No one but me, with God’s help, can make things better. I believe God will help me to get up, put one foot in front of the other, munch on veggies, and most importantly, spend more time with Him in His Word. God bless you for reaching out!

Good Morning, I just read through the challenge this morning and accept it.

Because I love myself, I will
    1. (right now I spend time reading God’s word and praying,) I would like to spend more time with God and learn to be still and listen to what He has to say to me, then me rushing through this time of Bible study and living life.

    2. Eating, i need to plan my meals weekly and purchase food at the beginning of the week. I need to plan more vegetables and fruit in each meal.

    3. To set aside the time to work out from 15 minutes to 1 hour each day, focusing on one of these each day, stretching, weight training, and or cardio . With friends or on my own.

As tough as it was, I enjoyed the Points Challenge and because I love myself, I’d like to build on that challenge to 1) spend 30 min each morning in the Word, 2) increase my daily water intake to 60 oz and work harder at limiting my daily sugar intake to <24 g, and 3) do some kind of physical exercise daily, alternating between strength training and walking/running as I begin training for a 5K. The Points Challenge helped me to start thinking more seriously about the healthy changes I need to make, and this new challenge will help me stay focused on these changes and hopefully make them solid new habits!
Thanks for your desire to help us love ourselves, Michelle,.I've struggled with this throughout my life because of bad choices I've made. God has really been challenging me to "Forget the former things and not dwell on the past. He is doing a NEW thing! He is making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland." Isaiah 43:18,19
